The original totems and tiled Mt. Rainier fireplace façade, lost in the intervening years, were renewed with new totems and tile work completed in January 2016. Highlighting the Catholic and Native history in the Puget Sound Region, the totems feature West Coast Native styles including Tlingit, Haida, Coastal Salish, Western symbols and influential historical figures. The depictions celebrate our unity under God.
New Washington Hotel, circa 1911.
The two totems and Native Dancing Masks were carved by local Tlingit professional artist, Odin Lonning. The totems sit on either side of the custom tile work of Mount Rainier amongst forest trees, created by local ceramic artist Mimi Miller Miles.
